Recruitment has now closed

We are recruiting participants to join a patient panel for two online workshops that will discuss poor communication within the health service from the perspectives of patients and carers with complex health needs.

Members of the panel will be asked to share their lived experience as patients or carers with complex health needs requiring ongoing support from two or more services/ agencies, such as primary, secondary, community and mental health.

We are looking for patients who have experience of two or more of the following:

  • Mental health concerns
  • Physical health condition
  • Learning disability
  • Physical disability
  • Homelessness.

These needs may often be severe, typically interact with one another, and might be difficult to treat. These definitions are adapted from All-Party Parliamentary Group Complex Needs & Dual Diagnosis definition.

Panellists will evaluate eight examples of good practice from across the NHS of demonstrably good, patient-centred, thoughtful communication between the health system and patients in the UK and whether the examples tackle the issues of poor communication as experience by participants.

Why we are running these workshops

These workshops are part of a bigger piece of work led by Engage Britain, a charity set up to bring people together to tackle our country’s biggest challenges, starting with making sure that everyone can get the health and care they need.

One of the top issues in health and care, decided by the members of Engage Britain's People's Panel, is how to improve the communication between the NHS and patients.

The challenge the People’s Panel members set was:

“Poor communication between different services, departments and patients leads to delays and gaps in receiving important care, which causes confusion, distress and disappointment for patients, especially for those with complex conditions and care needs.”

Engage Britain is bringing together groups of the public, patients with complex health needs, and non-clinical staff to review good practice and consider how this could be built on to improve the way the NHS communicates with people. Engage Britain will be taking the outputs from these workshops to party political conferences in autumn 2022, in order to get this issue higher up the political agenda to start improving the way things are done.

As panel members you will provide recommendations to Engage Britain and their Peoples Panel to address poor communication within the health service.

Engage Britain are funding this project.

Workshop dates are:

  • Wednesday 29 June times to be confirmed
  • Wednesday 13 July times to be confirmed

Please note you must be available for both workshops if you'd like to join the panel.
Participants will receive an £80 voucher for each workshop.

To register your interest in taking part, please fill out the expression of interest form.  If you've already told us you're interested, but not heard from us, please tell us again - we had a technical hitch with the form. We encourage people from all sections of the community to participate.   We are committed to having a diverse patient panel, and particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic, disabled, and LGBTQ volunteers.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 21st June at 3pm.
