Response to CMO's Report on Medical Revalidation

23rd July 2008

The Patients Association welcomes the announcement from the Chief Medical Officer in relation to revalidation and appraisals of doctors.

The Patients Association has been calling  for genuine assurance for patients that their doctors are up to date and safe to practice.

Speaking on publication of the report, Michael Summers Vice-Chairman of The Patients Association said:

'' This has the suuport of the General Medical Council, the British Medical Association and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. It will be welcomed by patients who will feel that members of the medical profession are shown to be performing well and are fit to practice in that they are being assessed annually by senior doctors in the locality and revalidation every five years, in order to have their licence to practice reissued and that patient involvement will pay a greater part.''
