Patients Association and Cure the NHS National Petition

Patients Association Press Release 22 March 2009

PATIENTS ASSOCIATION AND CURE THE NHS NATIONAL PETITION CALLING FOR A TRULY INDEPENDENT INQUIRY

Everyone in the country must be horrified by what happened at Mid Staffordshire from the details that we have seen in the press this week. There has been mismanagement of a staggering degree at all levels from the managers through to those responsible for regulating healthcare.

Claire Rayner said “What is needed now is an independent inquiry into the whole function of each of the regulatory authorities and organisations that should have picked up what was happening. All we want is to find out how and why it happened and prevent this terrible situation happening again.”

She added “We are asking all patients and the public for their help in signing the petition. We would be so proud if you would support us.”

Julie Bailey, founder of Cure the NHS said “I wouldn't want anyone else to receive the dreadful treatment my mother and others suffered. A truly independent inquiry would be the first step in making sure that doesn’t happen."

Sir Richard Branson, Patients Association Vice President said “The most important thing is that patients are happy and safe. I’ve signed the petition because I think patients need to have confidence that they will be. Inquiries are not about laying blame, they are about finding answers to important questions.”

Norman Lamb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary said “This is an incredibly important initiative from the Patients Association. There are so many unanswered questions and an independent inquiry is needed so that we can learn the lessons from this scandal.”

Katherine Murphy, Director of the Patients Association said “The reviews announced by the Government are not looking at the full picture and most of all are not independent. Patients deserve to have confidence in the care they are receiving and the Patients Association today demands consistency, transparency, accountability and most of all reliability in the systems that supervise hospital care.”

She added “What we want is effective use of public money and an efficient and safe service for the tax payer.”
