Clinical Awareness - What Non-Executives need to know

Sir Liam Donaldson is the Chief Medical Officer for England. He has been a leading figure in Patient Safety since the publication of his 2000 report ‘An organisation with a memory’. In October 2004, the World Health Organisation launched the World Alliance for Patient Safety, which Sir Liam has chaired since inception. At the Patients Association conference, Sir Liam shared a number of stories of people who have died as a result of adverse events. He emphasised that boards should actively use the stories of patients – from their own organisations and elsewhere – to ensure that they actively learn from mistakes. He asked directors to make sure that they constantly ask the right questions at board meetings, to ensure that safety remains at the heart of every organisation’s agenda and that the patient’s voice is heard throughout.
